Heights outlasted Mentor to win a double-overtime thriller in round two of the Thornton
Tournament. Dee Samuel ended the game 23 ticks into the
second overtime, starting in his own zone, passing a couple of Cardinals on the left wing
and cutting through the slot to tuck the puck inside the far post. The Tigers had started
the game strong and held a 2-0 lead at the midpoint.
Alex Kraus scored in the first period and
Paris Murray scored in the second before Mentor turned
up the heat. The Cardinals scored in the second and third to tie the game while Heights
struggled to dig out of the defensive zone. The teams then went scoreless during a
fast-paced five minute overtime leading up to Samuel's finale. His goal snapped the Tigers'
losing streak against Mentor that dated back four seasons. It also ended a three-year
drought at the Thornton Tournament. Daley Baker earned
his third win, stopping 27 of 29 shots.
